Kratom, scientifically referred to as Mitragyna speciosa, is an herbal tree native to Southeast Asia. It is indigenous to Malaysia, Thailand, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. The Kratom tree is part of the large Rubiaceae family, the same family as that of the coffee tree. The Kratom tree can grow up to 100ft in height and can spread up to 15ft or more. Before the Kratom tree was introduced to the western world, natives in Southeast Asia could chew the Kratom leaves or use them to make Kratom resin. The leaves were also smoked for preservation purposes, before they could be crushed and made into fine powder which would then be mixed into fruit juice or apple sauce for ease of consumption. After extensive scientific research, scientists and traditional medicine experts discovered that Kratom has some active ingredients that make it an effective herbal medicine for a wide range of complications. Today, most people take Kratom as a recreational drug.

Traditionally, field workers, farmers and day laborers could chew the Kratom leaves because of their stimulating effect. It is believed that chewing the leaves would make one work more efficiently and easily without getting tired very often. As a matter of fact, Kratom leaves have the same stimulating effect as those of coffee so Kratom was to natives in Southeast Asia what coffee is to people in the Western world. Traditional medicine men always recommended the use of kratom for inflammation, diarrhea, pain, high blood pressure, respiratory complications, and joint pains. It is believed that using Kratom resin on open wounds would accelerate the pace at which the wounds heal. The resin is made by boiling dried or fresh kratom leaves. For preservation purposes, most people would roll the resin made into balls before coating them with flour such that as it cools down, it hardens, thus making the resin last longer.
